The 2015-16 school year presents an exciting opportunity in the world of science education in Wayne as we begin to rollout the Next Generation Science Standards. The Next Generation Science Standards, or NGSS as they are known, represent a national movement constructed with participation from top universities, state departments of education, and teachers from all over the country.
The purpose of these standards is to provide students the opportunity to gather depth in content while supporting scientific practices in the classroom.
This approach will lead towards creating better thinkers and scientists. Classrooms will now focus on students learning through asking questions, creating their own experimentation, analyzing and interpreting data, and developing models just to name a few practices. Because of this shift, the classroom will feel a lot different, one where the students will be expected to engage and be active participants in their learning. This may be frustrating for the students but we look forward as a team of educators to allow for opportunities in which students find successes and challenges and we the teachers act as the facilitators of the learning process. It is our hope that students will be rejuvenated by this engagement and be excited to express their new experiences in the science classroom. We look forward to working with your children this year as we get to see science in action. Please feel free to let us know about any concerns or ideas you may have as we work together to provide 21st skills for our students.
